Damp is, unfortunately a very common problem that affects most and just about any home or property, regardless of how old it is. It comes in various guises and can be caused by a variety of factors, but the most feared of all, and often the most costly to fix - is a rising damp.

What is Rising Damp in Cape Town? A Rising-damp (with mold as its guise), is relatively rare compared to other forms of damp, such as condensation and penetrating damp. It usually only affects older buildings and houses which at most times have non or may not even ever have had any protective waterproof layers applied to their ground-floor walls or concrete floors. Even if they have, these layers can become damaged or ineffective over time.

How does it get started ? It occurs when the ground-water creeps up the (in-the) walls and/or through the floors of a building known as ‘capillary action’. Building materials such as bricks, cement and mortar are porous and they absorb and draw moisture upwards. Ever seen what happens when the dish cloth is halfway in the water and the other half is outside, the entire cloth gets wet. Capillary action is the same process.
